About the role
At Decagon, a leader in conversational AI platforms, the Senior/Staff Software Engineer will join the Data Lifecycle team responsible for managing sensitive customer data throughout its lifecycle. This team builds infrastructure ensuring data privacy and compliance for enterprise clients across multiple communication channels like voice, chat, and email. The role is based onsite in New York City and involves close collaboration with product management, governance, and security teams to translate complex privacy requirements into scalable, reliable systems.
Day-to-day responsibilities include designing and implementing systems for data collection, retention, redaction, and deletion that meet enterprise needs without customization per customer. The engineer will build APIs and tools enabling customers to configure data policies independently, develop LLM-backed anomaly detection, and extend data protection to multimodal content such as images and voice notes. Ownership spans from architecture through deployment and ongoing iteration, emphasizing fault tolerance, observability, and operational maturity for critical data workflows.
Candidates should have at least four years of software engineering experience with strong product sensibility, proficiency in Python, and expertise in backend systems involving asynchronous processing and failure recovery. Experience with PII detection, privacy workflows, security-sensitive systems, and familiarity with regulations like GDPR or CCPA is highly valued. The role demands strong debugging skills, judgment balancing speed and correctness, and a commitment to protecting sensitive data at scale for Fortune 100 clients.
