Software Engineer, Networking (Agent Infra)
Baseten San Francisco, New York
About the role
At Baseten, the Agent Infrastructure team is focused on building a custom networking stack tailored for their sandboxed microVM agents. These agents interact with AI models, tools, and services, requiring a scalable, low-latency network that supports frequent suspension, resumption, and data exchange. The team develops user-space networking using VPP technology and virtualized network functions to enable multi-tenant, secure, and private connectivity across regions, integrating closely with compute, storage, and GPU infrastructure teams.
The Software Engineer in Networking will design and implement the data plane connecting microVM sandboxes to each other, Baseten services, and external networks. Responsibilities include building overlay networks like EVPN and VXLAN, exposing programmable network APIs, optimizing latency and connection scale, and ensuring secure ingress and egress with features like firewalling and managed TLS. The role demands ownership of sandbox addressing, routing, observability, and debugging production issues end to end within a small, fast-moving team.
Candidates should have strong systems programming skills in Rust, Go, or C/C++, with experience in user-space packet processing, virtualized network functions, and multi-tenant cloud networking. A solid understanding of TCP/IP, routing, proxies, and load balancers is essential. Familiarity with VPP, Linux kernel networking, virtual machine networking, and multi-region traffic routing is a plus. The position is full-time and hybrid, based in San Francisco or New York, offering competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits.
